As the boys’ families realized they were missing, a massive search operation began. The bikes and belongings found near the cave entrance confirmed their worst fears – the Wild Boars were trapped inside.
The Search Begins
Thai authorities quickly mobilized a rescue operation involving the Thai Navy SEALs, local police, and volunteers. The first days of the search were challenging, as rescuers had limited cave diving experience and were hampered by rising flood waters.
Rescuers tried various strategies to locate the missing group, including pumping water out of the cave, drilling into the mountainside, and using thermal drones to detect heat signatures. Over the course of three days, all twelve boys and their coach were successfully extracted from the cave, in a rescue mission that captivated the world. The last Navy SEALs and rescue divers emerged from the cave on July 10, just as flood waters began to rise again.
Amidst the joy and relief, there was also tragedy. Saman Kunan, a former Thai Navy SEAL, lost his life during the mission while delivering oxygen tanks to the trapped group. His sacrifice underscored the danger and complexity of the rescue effort.
