A Look Ahead to 2021

In order to look ahead, we have to look behind, and make our projections based on what we saw and factor in any changes that could positively, or negatively, impact the riders. It’s hard not to include reigning champion, Eli Tomac, in the mix who became the oldest rider at age 27 in Supercross history to win his first championship in the 450 division.

But Tomac had plenty of company at the top as Cooper Webb and Ken Roczen became familiar faces at the podium, coming in win, place, or show a staggering 35 of 51 possible finishes at the podium. And let’s not forget that Zach Osborne won the 2020 season finale and has proven he can still get over the finish line first when it counts.

Shortly after winning last year’s title, Tomac had this to say, “I just always think back to this whole lifetime of riding,” he told NBC. “Going through everything. The failures with the team. Coming here with the whole COVID going on right now. So pretty unbelievable.

“There was a time we didn’t even know if we were going to be able to ride or not,” he added. “So, it’s finally here and unbelievable.”

We should also consider some young guns that could make noise this season. Chase Sexton is chief among them as his aggressive, yet strategic, style should make him an interesting rider on the tracks throughout the year. You might recall the Illinois native won the 250SX East Region Championship in 2019 and 2020 while he also won his first 450 division race in AMA Pro Motocross.

Joining Sexton on the Honda 450 Class team is the aforementioned, Ken Roczen. The German native has struggled with injuries but wisely sat out the 2020 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship in order to heal his body and prepare for the upcoming Supercross season.

“My health is a lot better now,” Roczen said in the team presentation. “I think it was a necessity to skip the 2020 Pro Motocross season just to kind of get my body back aligned. And there was no point in me going racing, especially with the way the year has been with COVID[-19] so I decided, and I think it was for the better, to sit that out and get everything back and check. So we started back up slowly and I’m in a really good position right now and I can’t wait to finally get back to racing in the 2021 supercross season.”

Out top five Supercross riders for 2021 are as follows:

  1. Ken Roczen
  2. Justin Barcia
  3. Jason Anderson
  4. Eli Tomac
  5. Chase Sexton
